19 May 2016: Sidiq Khan Urges HS2 to Think Again About a Euston Terminus
London Mayor Sadiq Khan
The Mayor of London has revealed strong "concerns" about High Speed 2's plans for Euston and says he wants railway bosses to look again at a terminus in west London instead.
Sadiq Khan was put on the spot over his views on HS2 by a caller from Camden Town to James O'Brien's LBC Radio show on Wednesday 18 May 2016, with anger still remaining over how the planned Euston terminus will lead to demolition and disruption for years.
Mr Khan said: "HS2 is a wonderful idea but I have got concerns whether Euston is the right station for the London part of HS2. There are faster links to Heathrow and Crossrail.
"The disruption during building works will cause huge inconvenience, the numbers of homes being destroyed. If you think about it, Euston Station doesn't have links to Crossrail.
"We should look at Old Oak Common as a station for it to go to. There are faster links to Heathrow and Crossrail. Watch this space – I'll speak to those at HS2 to do right by Euston,” Sadiq Khan said.
HS2 has not been officially approved by Parliament and is still being picked apart by a House of Lords select committee.
