Homeland star Damian Lewis sent a strongly-worded letter to be read out at a public meeting in London on Tuesday (20 January 2015) as part of a campaign to stop a supermarket chain opening a new branch in an upmarket neighbourhood. Fellow actors Emma Thompson and Tom Conti are among those opposing plans to open a Tesco store in Belsize Park, and Lewis has now become the latest north London resident to speak out in a bid to protect the local area.
Residents who are opposed to the plans attended a public meeting with representatives from Tesco on Tuesday, and they were joined by veteran actress Dame Janet Suzman, who read out a note from Lewis. The note stated, "Independent shops are vital to the community for diversity and social interaction. Neighbourhoods are happier places for them. Yet another Tesco would badly undermine this."
Oscar winner Thompson, who lives nearby, previously said of the scheme, "Belsize is a villagey area – it has no need of a Tesco and its very nature will be threatened. The people who live there do not want it... I will be signing petitions and writing to the press on this subject but... (I) also wanted to express my personal and deeply felt objection." A spokesman for Tesco says, "We came to this meeting to hear residents' concerns as part of our consultation and we will continue to listen to opinions constructively throughout the consultation... Our other stores in the area are profitable and popular and there's no doubt the new store would also be popular."
